Helene Aylon, The Digital Liberation of G-d (2004)

Helene Aylon's The Digital Liberation of G-d (2004) is an interactive computer installation that “writes through” the Five Books of Moses and highlights what the artist considers to be misogynist, homophobic, and violent phrases in Judaism's sacred Torah.  An earlier version of the work, The Liberation of G-d was featured in Norman Kleeblatt's exhibition Too Jewish? at the Jewish Museum in New York in 1996 and it was discussed in a feature article by Robert Berlind in “Helene Aylon: Deconstructing the Torah,” in Art in America .  The digital version of the work allows for interactive responses and commentaries on the part of the users.  It recently premiered at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco in April 2004 and was acquired as one of five permanent editions. (The fifth is a traveling edition.)

Helene Aylon is an internationally renowned visual artist based in New York who works at the crossroads of women's issues and Jewish ritual and who also has a strong interest in environmental art.  Her recent projects have included The Women's Section and My Notebooks.  She was honored as the recipient of the Visual Arts Award of the National Foundation of Jewish Culture in 2002.
